At the SITS User Conference 2012, a presentation was delivered by Dr. Richard Clark (University of London International Programmes) which also included a section to promote activities of the SITS Trainers Network.

The presentation by Dr. Richard Clark was titled:
“SITS Training at the University of London and an introduction to the SITS Trainers Network”.

Notes are available from the discussion section of the presentation which included an overview of the SITS Trainers Network.

Notes from Discussions about the SITS Trainers Network:

Many of the group were keen to be involved with sharing useful manuals or small ‘snippets’ of notes which could be re-purposed.

Different approaches to training is definitely a hot topic for the group including elements of ‘good practise’ and what went well (or badly) for some other institutions.

Further ‘showcases’ of training at various institutions would be helpful to the group in the future. Perhaps we could also partition this topic into various themes such as:

  • e-learning / blended learning.
  • Examples of ‘in class’ learning styles.
  • Adapting learning to meet specific training needs (one to ones, coaching, different approaches used – i.e. how to teach a blind user using JAWS etc).
  • Managing a training environment/software.
  • Using additional media (video, voice-over, interactive demo’s etc) to assist learning.
  • How to evaluate training – what lessons can we learn?
  • Creating (in collaboration) and sharing supportive documents – i.e. not just SITS training notes but how to use VLE’s (i.e. Moodle), how to manage training data/environments, how to create e-learning demos etc.
  • Examples of free tools that can be used for training (i.e. Wink by Debugmode).
  • Guides to ‘where to start’ for any staff new to training.

Discussions with other institutions with regards to ‘free venues’ where we could potentially host further SITS Training Network/Group events. Perhaps delegates could bring their own catering or break to get their own?

Web-hosting of group materials – Oxford may be able to help with this for a year.

Create a survey to send out to all institutions to find out how they are approaching training.

Further facilitated discussions to address common issues faced by institutions.
